queen ann's lace
By Yer Fat Aunt Annie
The general gay community isn't the only group which knows very little about "us" (drag queens, transvestites, transexuals, et. al.). Up until a few years ago, The Medical Establishment was quite willing to accept the concept that everyone knew what little boys and little girls were made of. Why, naturally: puppy dog's tails, spice and all that crap!
The subject of sexualism, the effect of hormones and the evolvement of gender (as opposed to sex as identified merely by peeking in one's pants to see what kind of genitals one had) were all tabu subjects. Just as are still the subjects of the effect of hormone imbalances on the emotions and physical condition of females during menustral periods thanks to continued MCP attitude of most MD's not to mention the fact that such information is "unimportant"! (Despite the fact that millions of women suffer from intense migrane headaches, unexplained allergies, etc. during their "monthly.")
...
At last, the puppy-dog-tails-and-spice theory has come in for some investigation. Real, genuine, serious medical research. And, thanks to the fact that a member of the Cuyahoga County Public Library Staff recently had a sex change you can even read all about it just by taking a book off the open shelves of your nearby public library (heavens, what IS our world coming to!) Sad to say, there's still nothing concrete on the subject of hormonal imbalances for the females in our world, but if they keep the fact that they're really first class citizens in front of the general population, maybe things will begin to happen!
and it does not come off properly the male is turned
A man by the name of John Money, PhD and long-time force behind the gender identity backward toward the female problem at Johns Hopkins development path! These University and a woman named subversions can show up in the Patricia Tucker from the same form of a boy child without institution have some interesting testicles. before a child is even born.
According to the authors, the basic building block of the human race is FEMALE (sorry guys). They postulate that the fetus starts out as primarily female in all genital development. And that at various stages in the development (beginning right with the infamous XX vs. XY chromosome combination at conception) minute quantities of chemicals and glandular secretions and tiny physical changes occur, one by one, to alter the basic female building block and make it a male.
If none of the chemicals and hormones appear and none of the tiny physical changes occur, the
fetus continues on the mainstream of development and becomes a female. At each point
in
the road of development where one of these items is to appear, and does, changes in the fetus bring it closer and closer to being born a male baby.
Now comes the scary part. Let's suppose the right combination of genes got
together to make a boy baby. And a boy begins to develop. At ANY of the numerous stages where a change is to occur --
QUEEN JADWIGA OF POLAND
A caution: the authors do not say that genetics, hormones and physical development are the ONLY keys to why this happens. But they do suggest that there are basic, physical deficiencies and non-environmental factors that go to make boys be boys and girls be girls and a lot of us be something in between.
By all means, go read the book. Decide for yourself. It may help you understand the drives which motivate those who are "effeminate" among us...those who "just have to dress like a woman"... and those males who
readily admit to being more comfortable in the presence of females than in the presence of
males

And, while you're there, check out another book: Transvestites and Transexuals, Some Mixed Views. It was written by a sociologist from Boston named Deborah Heller Feinbloom after long association with an organized group of drag queens in the Boston area (betcha didn't know we were organized, did you? But then there's the old hack of a story about the Staten Island Ferry and gays having their own Navy, so why not?)
Ms. Feinbloom's universe on which she bases her commentary is one that most gays never penetrate: the world of the closet queen (drag variety). Respected businessmen, educators and professional people ranging in age from mid-20's to retirement age who have never revealed their gender identity crisis to anyone but others with similar problems. And who had their own little "clubhouse" where they could take on their female roles and share a few minutes of companionship, if not peace. Her observations are that of a trained sociologist. And, though far from conclusive, will help you understand a little more about what makes "us girls" do the things we do and feel the way we feel.
You see, that's the reason for this column to help the gay community understand one of its most misunderstood and maligned minorities. To know us may well not be to love us (though we can hope!). But at least understanding can breed some degree of co-existence and willingness to not put down what you really don't know--but may fear more than you realize.
